Mexico Residence Permit: Digital Nomad and Renewal Tutorial (2026)

Mexico does not have a visa formally called a “digital nomad visa.” For a remote worker planning to live in Mexico for more than 180 days while supported by foreign salary, savings or investments, the usual route is the Temporary Resident Visa, often on the basis of economic solvency.

This guide covers the decision first, then the two practical processes people often confuse: the first consular visa + INM card exchange and a later Temporary Resident Card renewal through family unity. It is not legal or tax advice. Mexican employment, Mexican clients and tax residence need individual advice.

The quick answer

Mexico’s Migration Law permits a visitor to remain for up to 180 days without permission for paid activities in Mexico. Temporary residence is a different immigration condition and may last up to four years under the law.

Visitor stay, temporary residence and remote work

The question is not whether a person calls themselves a digital nomad. It is how long they plan to stay and how they are paid.

Several Mexican consulates describe Temporary Resident status as suitable for a person working while their salary is paid abroad. A Mexican employer paying salary in Mexico is different: the employer must follow the appropriate INM authorisation route. See the Mexican Consulate’s temporary-resident guidance .

Keep these points separate:

• A visitor entry is not a residence card.
• A Temporary Resident Visa is not a blanket authorisation for every Mexican client, Mexican payroll or independent activity.
• Immigration residence and Mexican tax residence are separate questions.
• Visitors generally cannot switch status inside Mexico. Plan the consular visa before the entry that begins your residence process.

Tutorial: book the Temporary Resident Visa appointment

Use this route when you are applying from outside Mexico for the first time.

1. Find the Mexican consular office with jurisdiction over you in SRE’s consulate directory . If you are applying outside your country of nationality, check that the office accepts legal residents of that country.
2. Open that office’s current Temporary Resident Visa page. For foreign-paid remote work, the likely route is economic solvency. Read its exact financial threshold, statement format, translation rule and appointment instructions; they vary by post.
3. Go to the official MiConsulado appointment service , select the office and follow its visa booking flow. Do not pay a third party merely to obtain an appointment.
4. Bring the current checklist in the order requested: passport, form, photo, proof of legal stay in the country of application when applicable, financial evidence and any employment or pension evidence the office requires.
5. Attend the interview and biometrics appointment. Explain your work, income and stay consistently with the documents. Do not present Mexican employment as foreign remote work.
6. Pay only as the consulate instructs and retain the receipt. The 2026 consular fee for a Temporary Resident Visa is US$56.
7. Do not book non-refundable travel on the assumption that the visa will be issued on the day. SRE publishes a maximum service response time, but a consulate can request more documents or review.

The financial-solvency amount is evidence, not a fee. A consulate commonly evaluates a history of income or an average bank/investment balance, but the exact amount and currency conversion are specific to the post handling the application.

Tutorial: exchange the visa for the first resident card at INM

After you enter Mexico with the residence visa, you have 30 calendar days to complete the canje at INM. Keep your passport, visa and entry record together.

1. Open INM’s migratory procedures page and confirm the current canje requirements and fee.
2. Generate the application in INM’s online stay form . Choose Canjear o reponer documento migratorio → Canje de FMM por Tarjeta de Residente o Visitante.
3. Save the generated PDF and its número de pieza (often called a folio). The number is needed for the INM appointment.
4. Use the INM Services Portal , choose Immigration Procedures (Online Appointment) / Trámites Migratorios, create or activate the account, and request the canje appointment.

5. Take the appointment voucher, passport, visa, entry record, application, payment receipt and every original document specified by INM. The applicant must attend for photo, signature and fingerprints.

Tutorial: renew a Temporary Resident Card through family unity

This process is for someone who already has a Temporary Resident Card through family unity—for example, marriage to a Mexican citizen—and whose family basis continues. It is not the first application for a visitor married to a Mexican citizen; that person needs a change-of-status route instead.

1. Generate the pieza / folio

Start only when the current card is within 30 calendar days of expiry. Have the card, passport, current Mexican address and an email account beside you.

1. Open INM’s online stay form . This is the application form, not the appointment portal.
2. Disable the browser pop-up blocker; INM creates a PDF at the end.
3. Under ¿Qué deseas hacer?, select Extender la estancia.
4. Under Especifica, select Expedición de Tarjeta de Residente por Renovación. Do not choose Canje de FMM.
5. Copy the name, birth date and passport details exactly from the passport. Enter the current Mexican address accurately: the registered state/entity affects which INM offices the appointment system can offer.
6. Enter an email address you control, click Guardar, confirm only after checking every field, then select Imprimir ahora.
7. Save and print the PDF. Its número de pieza is the folio you need to request an appointment. Keep the PDF and the password sent electronically together.

The pieza and password are also used to track the procedure . They are different from the NUT that INM may issue when it formally receives the application.

2. Prepare the renewal file before booking

Place the following in one folder:

• Current Temporary Resident Card, original.
• Printed pieza / application.
• Payment receipt, original and copy.
• A completed, original “Escrito Renovación por vínculo familiar (Matrimonio)”. Find it in the INM procedures microsite : Expedición de Tarjeta de Residente por Renovación → Requisitos → the burgundy link with that title.
• Valid passport and a copy as supporting identification.

For a spouse of a Mexican citizen or resident, INM says the family-unity statement must have both people’s signatures. Do not replace it with the longer change-of-status document list. If a foreign marriage certificate is requested or newly needed, it can require apostille/legalisation and Spanish translation.

3. Request and confirm the INM appointment

1. Open the INM Services Portal . Select Immigration Procedures (Online Appointment) / Trámites Migratorios—not the FMM or pre-registration tile.
2. Create an account if necessary, activate the email link, then sign in. INM says the activation link lasts 72 hours.
3. Select Expedición de Tarjeta de Residente por Renovación and copy the pieza number, birth date, Mexican state/entity of domicile and passport number exactly as shown in the PDF.
4. Choose from the offices and times the system displays. Polanco is an option only if the system offers it for the address registered in the application.
5. Confirm the appointment within 10 minutes, then download the voucher. A confirmed appointment can only be cancelled at least 24 hours before its scheduled time.

If the portal says “information not found,” compare the four data points above to the PDF character by character. If you selected the wrong procedure, cancel the appointment, generate a new pieza and book again.

4. Attend, pay and track

Arrive around 10 minutes early with the voucher and originals. INM requires original, legible documents and the applicant’s presence for photo, signature and fingerprints.

INM accepts payment at the office by Visa or Mastercard debit/credit card or through its hoja de ayuda process; it does not accept cash. Keep every receipt. If a decision is pending, use the INM tracking page with the pieza and password; that page also lets you recover the password with the pieza number and registered email.

2026 prices: visa, card and renewal

SRE lists US$56 for the Temporary Resident Visa and, where applicable, the Visitor Visa . INM publishes the card and work-permission charges in its migratory procedures microsite . Recheck both sources immediately before payment.
